Overview

THE PATIENTS is a brutal, small-town horror story about curiosity, denial, and the monsters a community chooses not to see.

Set just outside the quiet mountain town of Weston, West Virginia, the film centers on Fairview Psychiatric Hospital, a decaying institution hidden deep in the surrounding woods. Officially, Fairview treats violent and psychotic patients. Unofficially, it’s a place surrounded by rumors, scandals, and unexplained disappearances—topics the townspeople would rather forget.

One autumn night, four restless teenagers—Riley, Steve, Amanda, and Mike—decide to investigate a local urban legend tied to Fairview. According to the story, on warm nights the hospital releases its patients onto the surrounding grounds, allowing them to wander the forest unsupervised. Some say it’s for exercise. Others believe it’s how Fairview disposes of failed medical experiments.

The ritual is simple: drive to the locked back gate on Fairview Lane, shut off the engine, keep the headlights on, and wait. If the legend is true, the patients will come.

At first, it feels like a joke—an excuse for trespassing and a viral social media post. But when figures begin emerging from the woods—laughing, watching, pressing their faces against the windows—the thrill turns to terror. The teenagers find themselves surrounded by patients in filthy hospital gowns, their behavior oscillating between childlike curiosity and feral rage.

Panic erupts. The escape attempt fails. The car crashes. And one by one, the teens are dragged screaming into the darkness as the forest swallows them whole.

By morning, only the car remains—cleaned, emptied, and mysteriously relocated miles away. No blood. No phones. No bodies.

The town searches. The hospital denies everything. Fairview opens its doors to investigators, revealing nothing. Officially, the teenagers vanished without explanation.

Unofficially, a new rumor spreads.

Some say there’s a hidden basement beneath Fairview Hospital. A place where the most disturbed patients are kept out of sight. And at night, a young man’s screams echo through the halls—calling for help.

A young man who once answered to the name Steve.

THE PATIENTS is a cautionary tale about what happens when curiosity collides with institutional secrecy—and how some urban legends exist not to scare outsiders, but to warn locals to stay silent.
